Light: Fishbone cactus thrives in bright, indirect light. It prefers filtered sunlight or partial shade. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so avoid placing it in intense afternoon sun. An east or west-facing window is ideal.
Temperature: Fishbone cactus prefers temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C) during the growing season. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures in winter but should be protected from drafts and cold drafts.
Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or orchid potting mix. A mix that contains perlite, sand, or small gravel helps provide good drainage. Alternatively, you can create your own mix with these components.
Watering: Water fishbone cactus thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Allow excess water to drain away completely and avoid letting the plant sit in water. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows down, allowing the soil to dry out more between waterings.
Humidity: Fishbone cactus appreciates moderate humidity levels. You can increase humidity by misting the plant occasionally or placing a humidity tray filled with water and pebbles beneath the pot.
Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed fishbone cactus monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding or stop altogether in autumn and winter when growth slows down.
Potting and Repotting: Repot fishbone cactus every 2-3 years in spring if it has outgrown its pot. Choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes to accommodate the roots. Handle the plant carefully due to its fragile stems.
